CSABAY, Domonkos (HUN)
Collaborative Pianist
Concert pianist and chamber musician Domonkos Csabay is a former fellow of the Royal College of Music in London, currently working as an educator and free lance performer. His duo with cellist Domonkos Hartmann (Duo Domo) won 1st prize and Audience Prize at the Lyon International Chamber Music Competition. He is also a member of the Odysseus Piano Trio, performing a wide range of classical repertoire.
Domonkos studied with András Kemenes and István Lantos at the Liszt Academy in Budapest, and is a graduate of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, where his professors were Pascal Nemirovski and John Thwaites. He is currently working towards a doctorate degree at the Liszt Academy, where the focus of his research is on Liszt’s Mozart transcriptions.
He has made several appearances as a concerto soloist, with orchestras such as that of the Spanish Radio, Birmingham Philharmonic or Oxford Sinfonia, and won important awards such as the Finalist Prize in the Paloma O’Shea Competition in Santander, Special Prize at the Budapest Liszt Competition or 1st Prize at the Amy Brant Piano Competition. His performances have been broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and in the Hungarian Radio. His debut CD was issued by Naxos in 2021, showcasing Liszt arrangements of national tunes. His second solo album appeared under the title “Generations”, with the label Hungaroton in 2023.
Besides pursuing a solo career, his keen interest in different forms of musical expression led him to work in multiple fields: répétiteuring for renowned companies such as the Longborough Festival Opera or Birmingham Opera Company, and co-operating with diverse chamber ensembles, such as Ensemble 360 or Sinfonia Cymru. Prizes for collaborative pianism and even composition (in international competitions in Wales and Romania, respectively) demonstrate his multifaceted artistic approach.
He has been on stage in numerous prestigious venues such as London’s Wigmore Hall, the Palace of Arts in Budapest or the Lyon Opera House, and he was invited to perform in many important festivals throughout Europe.
Domonkos has received several favourable press reviews. He was praised for his “personality and panache” by the Birmingham Post, and for his “intelligence, respect and imagination” by the Fanfare magazine. Reviewing his Liszt album, the American Record Guide caracterised him with an “excellent taste and technique”, while MusicWeb International sensed a “distinctly Hungarian edge in his masterful playing”.
